E1 interface allows CEL's axle counters to be used with OFC communication system. It provides an E1 (G.703) interface so that it can be connected to the OFC system directly. It provides a means of using the axle counters without using the PD Mux that is now being phased out in the industry. It is expected to enhance reliability of axle counter communication and make way for Railways to use axle counters on OFC cable system.

It also takes care of accidental wrong configuration in the OFC system by using a unique addressing scheme. This is continuously checked by both the end devices so that the communication is established only in mated pairs. This enhances safety and makes this converter unique for Railway's application.
